There are many in car camera systems on the market today and not all are created equal. When choosing an in car camera, there are a few key features you should look for.
1. Video quality: As with any video camera, the quality of the video it produces is of the utmost importance. The biggest contributors to the video quality of an in car camera system are framerate, resolution and compression. For shooting fast moving video, the framerate should never be lower than 30FPS (frames per second). Anything less will result in choppy video. If you primarily watch videos on the computer, a 720x480 SD resolution will suffice but 720p or 1080p will be noticably better. If you primarily watch your in car camera videos on you big screen TV, you'll need to upgrad to a 720p system. Should you get 1080p or 720p? Unless you plan on watching your videos on a Blu-Ray player or you need to create Blu-Ray DVD's, the typical user will not see any difference between 1080p and 720p. Compression is tricky. In general, the more you compress, the worse the quality gets. However, a higher bitrate does not mean a better video. We recommend a product with H.264 compression. This method provides superior video quality while maintaining a low bitrate.
2. Rugged, Weatherproof design: Let's face it. These cameras are gonna be used outdoors and take a beating. A rugged, weatherproof in car camera is a must.
3. Stable Mount: No matter how you plan on using your camera, chances are you'll be on a motorized vehicle and motors vibrate. Selecting an in car camera system with a stable mount will ensure that your video is not shaky.
4. Replaceable Lens Glass: Regardless of if you run on dirt or asphalt, your in car camera will be subjected to flying projectiles ranging in size from small specs to pebbles and rocks. It's inevitable that at some point, your glass will get pitted or even break. Unless you have a system with replaceable glass, you're stuck.
5. LCD Display: Having an LCD display allows you to properly line up your camera angle as well as playback and review recorded video on the go. There's nothing worse than shooting an entire race only to find out that you would have liked to have the camera adjusted higher or that you needed to adjust the exposure compensation.
